Best Position Fit
3-4 Outside Linebacker or 4-3 Defensive End
Elite first step quickness. Prototypical height, weight, and speed for the position. Excellent bend around the edge.
Oddly took a few months off during the spring (2017) for “personal reasons”. Also suffered a partially torn labrum in the spring 2017. Needs to improve against the run. Plays too tall and upright. Relies on his physical ability too much, and needs to improve his techniques. At times he looks like he is running around the field trying to find something to do. He is raw and still learning the game.
Arden Key is fun to watch. LSU stands him up and moves him around a bit, but he mostly lines up on the right side. Physically gifted and he is just getting started. Not sure what the leave of absence is all about. I am sure teams will drill him on it. His upside is Jason Pierre-Paul ability. However, his downside would be Barkevious Mingo. Arden has a first-round grade with a boom or bust warning.
Arden Key has the athletic ability to be a top 5 pick in just about any draft. Yet he has fallen to No. 24 in this mock and realistically could fall all the way out of the first round. About a year ago, I compared Arden to Barkevious Mingo, and that was based on his football play. Arden is a special talent, but if he wants to do anything with his career then he needs to dedicate his life to football. His natural ability has got him this far, and if he masters proper techniques then he could be a special player. His career will be determined by how much he wants to play football. If he wants it then a team is going to get the steal of the draft. Unfortunately, teams must worry about him cashing a check and then checking out.
11/24/2016 – Arden Key suspended by team for unspecified off-the-field issues. Will not play against Texas A&M.
02/15/2017 – LSU announces Arden Key taking leave of absence from program
