Before enrolling at Ohio State to play football, Sam Hubbard had committed to Notre Dame to play lacrosse. Although Hubbard played safety at Moeller High School, Ohio State introduced him on national signing day as a 6’6″ 225-pound linebacker. However, the coaching staff was not really sure where to play him. In 2014, Hubbard started off as a tight end before moving to defensive end, which was a natural fit. Unfortunately for Hubbard, the Buckeyes were loaded with defensive ends (led by Joey Bosa) so the coaching staff decided to redshirt him for the 2014 season.
Following a redshirt season consisting of three position changes and adding forty pounds to his frame, Hubbard finally saw the field on opening day in 2015. He started at defensive end in place of suspended teammate Joey Bosa, in a 42-24 victory over the Hoakies. For the game he recorded 4 tackles, 1.5 for loss, and a sack. Hubbard performed so well, the defensive coaches changed their blueprint for the season and moved Bosa inside. Hubbard finished the season with 28 tackles (8 for loss), 6.5 sacks, 3 quarterback hurries, an interception, a forced fumble, and a pass break up.
Hubbard started all 13 games in 2016 recording 46 total tackles (8 for loss) with 3.5 sacks. He announced in late December, of 2016 that he was coming back to Ohio State in 2017. Saw more double teams in 2016 without Joey Bosa, who departed the NFL.
Clay Matthews III
Best Position Fit
4-3 Defensive End or 3-4 Outside Linebacker
Good pass rusher, and an even better run defender.
Needs to continue to get stronger and learn how to play off the edge. He has a lot of talent around him.
Sam Hubbard is getting better every season. He might be best best suited as a 43 defensive end. However, he has the athletic ability to stand up and move around in the 34. He could possibly get a call on Day 1.
