Father Ed McCaffrey played 13 years in the NFL. Christian McCaffrey won the Paul Hornung Award, Associated Press Player of the Year, Pac-12 Player of the Year, and finished second in Heisman voting in 2015. He set a NCAA record with 3,864 all-purpose yards; posting 2,019 yards rushing, 645 receiving, and 1,070 on kickoff returns. Followed up in 2016 rushing for 1,639 yards with 13 rushing touchdowns, and added 310 receiving yards with 3 touchdowns.
Excellent change-of-direction with elite acceleration. Excellent pass catcher; outstanding route runner with exceptional hands. Downhill runner with good vision.
Has a lot of wear-and-tear (745 touches in three years). Was slowed by injuries in 2016 and skipped the Sun Bowl. Needs to improve in pass protection. More likely to make defenders miss than break tackles.
Chris Johnson is the only modern day 200 pound bell-cow back to have success. However, today’s NFL offenses don’t typically focus on a single back. He ran effectively between the tackles in college. Injuries are a concern, and NFL teams will question how much tread is left on the tires. More than likely a top 20 pick, and he could go in the top 10.
