It appears Sam Darnold will start at QB for the Jets on opening day. Darnold started in the dress rehearsal game and proved the game was not too big for him. The Jets are probably not going to contend with Darnold this year. However, the only way to become an experienced player is to play.

I have said this for a while now, and I believe we could see Josh Allen starting for the Bills on opening day. I don’t think the Bills have a quarterback on the roster that offers more than Allen does. The Bills have a good team overall, and they might still be competitive with a rookie under center.

The Broncos have early signs of a strong rookie class. Bradley Chubb, Courtland Sutton, and Royce Freeman could all be impact players for the Broncos as early as this season.

Redskins RB Adrian Peterson ran well Friday night against the Broncos. Peterson was on the field for 14 of Alex Smith’s 25 plays, carrying the ball 11 times for 56 yards. Former RB Clinton Portis, a sideline reporter during the game, said Peterson is the favorite to win the starting position. Jay Gruden was impressed as well. Peterson was playing for his career Friday, and it appears his NFL journey will continue.

Packers rookie CBs Jaire Alexander and Josh Jackson are as good as advertised. Alexander snagged an interception from Connor Cook, and Josh Jackson had a pick 6, called back due to a defensive holding penalty away from the play. The Packers pass rush was terrible in 2017. There are 2 ways to attack the problem. One way is to get better pass rushers (not easy to do) and the other way is to get better coverage personnel. The Packers chose the latter.

Dez Bryant boasts on Instagram that he has a contract offer from the Browns. Obviously, this isn’t an offer with as many zeros as he wants, because if it were then he would have surely signed it. My guess is that it is a 1-year offer that is not close to the numbers Dez is looking for. That said, this is Dez we are talking about here, so who knows?

Congratulations to A.Q. Shipley for getting extended through 2019, even though his season ended early in training camp after suffering a torn ACL. There are guys that we just root for in the NFL. Shipley is one of them. Remember when he was the best center in Indianapolis, but the Colts did everything they could not to play him? The Colts were desperately looking for a center and had a good one on the roster but ignored it. Shipley followed Bruce Arians to Arizona and he has thrived ever since. The Colts didn’t like that his arms were too short or something…. It was a bizarre situation.

The number 25 overall pick, Hayden Hurst, will likely miss the beginning of the season after getting surgery on his foot. The Ravens TE has a stress fracture that required a screw to be inserted. Hurst is expected to miss three-to-four weeks.

Colts RB Marlon Mack might not be ready on opening day. Someone to keep an eye on is rookie RB Jordan Wilkins. He is a tough runner in between the tackles, and he could be a nice option as a short yardage back. With Mack’s hamstring injury and Robert Turbin serving a four-game suspension, Wilkins will have an opportunity to shine and he might. Mack is the lightning in Indy and Wilkins could be the Thunder.

Richard Sherman could play about a half against the Colts today. The new addition to the 49ers secondary has been hampered with a hamstring injury.
