Mike McGlinchey Scouting Report

Prospect Information

Offensive Line Pass Blocking Statistics

Overview
Mike McGlinchey redshirted his freshman year (2013). Played in all 13 games as a redshirt freshman (2014); mostly on special teams. Did have one start at right tackle in win over LSU (31-28) in the Music City Bowl.

Started all 13 games at right tackle as a sophomore (2015). Moved to the left tackle his junior season (2016), and started all 12 games. Decided to return for a 5th year (4th football season) in 2017.

Mike McGlinchey wanted to be more polished before entering the NFL draft. He chose the same route of his predecessor Ronnie Stanley, who stayed an extra year and was chosen 6th overall. Stanley was the first offensive lineman taken in the 2016 NFL draft.

Best Position Fit
Right Tackle

Strengths
He is the best run blocker of all tackles in this years draft. Elite run blocking ability. Elected team captain in 2016 and 2017. Very driven. Does not want to be good; he wants to be great. Consistently uses hands instead of body in run blocking. Prototypical height and weight for the position.

Weaknesses
Had 12 Unnecessary penalties in 2016 (9 false starts). Can struggle against speedy ends, especially when they line up wide (such as the 9-technique). Struggled in pass protection in 2017 vs Miami and Georgia. Allowed 14 quarterback pressures, including 3 sacks in 2017.

Summary
Mike McGlinchey could have declared for the 2016 NFL draft, and probably would have been a first-round pick. He understands himself very well, and felt like he was not ready to enter the 2016 NFL draft.

I think McGlinchey could begin his NFL tenure as a right tackle, because it will mask his weakness (elite pass rushers), and enhance his strength (run blocking). Although he could have a nice career at left tackle, he might have an even better career playing right tackle. He should be a top 25 pick in the 2018 NFL draft.
